Holt Tournament Report (March 20)

After a week of tryouts, Milford took it's extended roster to Holt on Saturday to play three games in the cold and snow (welcome to the Michigan springtime).

First, the Lady Mavs beat Stockbridge, 3-0, and scored early on a pass out of the box by sophomore Sarah Barnhard to freshman Paige Smith, who fired a shot over the keeper for her first varsity goal.  Later in the half, Smith took the ball down the right wing, and sent a ball to the goal crease, deflected out to Barnhard, who basically bumped the ball off her body into the goal.  The Mavs controlled the play in the second half, and senior tri-captain Tess Zasuwa sent a corner kick out in front, which was one-timed in the air into the goal by Smith and her second goal of the game.  Milford had many quality scoring opportunities throughout the game with shots taken by several different attackers (seniors Ryan Winn, Hayley Bensek, and tri-captain Adrien Allward, juniors Abby Sprinkle, tri-captain Sam Sturgeon and Alex Peterson, sophomore Meghan Darby).  The defense did their job to keep the ball into the offensive end, and the goalkeeping wasn't tested in the game.

In the second game against Riverview, Milford found the pressure to be more intense, but winning 1-0.  Milford scored the only goal of the game, when a corner kick by Sam Sturgeon was deflected out to the 18, and junior Abby Sprinkle swiped the ball out of midair perfectly over the defense into the top corner of the net (that's two one-timers on corner kicks for Milford for the day!).  The Mavs needed good defense and goalkeeping from sophomore Emily Mienkwic and senior Sara Cupp to keep Riverview off the board.

The third game against Northepointe Christian was played in the snow, with Northepointe winning 1-0.
