5/18:  Mavs Dominate Against Howell

Milford went to Howell, and showed what they can do to an opponent that's not ranked in the State's top-10, as they started quickly, and continued their attack to the end, winning 4-0, their second victory over Howell for the season, and their fourth shutout of the season.

After a couple of minutes of play, sophomore Erin Winn took the ball into the Highlander end, and created an open opportunity to shoot high on the goal.  The keeper did all she could to tip the ball, which fell over her head.  Senior tri-captain AG Allward charged the loose ball, and both her and the Highlander keeper fell into the net, with the ball laying on the line.  AG quickly stepped back out of the goal, and punched the ball into the goal, her fourth goal of the season.

Later in the first half, Erin Winn again broke from the baseline, and lifted a pass across the box to the far end, with her sister, senior Ryan Winn, positioning for the pass, who scored at close range, her fourth goal of the season.

In the second half, Allward was fouled in the box, and junior tri-captain Sam Sturgeon took the penalty kick, and she drilled the ball to the wide post, her third goal of the season.

Late in the half, Sturgeon this time took the corner kick, and sent the ball into the box, which ended up on the far side, with freshman Paige Smith gathering in the ball, and fired it past the keeper, Smith's 8th goal of the season.

Milford's defense and keeper's preserved the shutout by keeping Howell out of their end most of the night, allowing only a few good opportunities, led by senior tri-captain Tess Zasuwa and seniors Hayley Bensek, Alyssa Adams, Kara Johnson, juniors Max Howard and Alex Petersen, and sophomore Sarah Bonhard, and keepers Emily Mienkwic and Sara Cupp.

JV Over Howell in a Comeback Win

The Lady Mavs JV team played one of their best games, and definately their best half, of the season to gain an exciting come-from-behind 2-1 road victory over Howell.

The first half was evenly played with Milford having a slight edge in possession, but Howell got the only score on a breakaway goal.

In the second half, the Lady Mavs came out really strong with a lot of offensive pressure by Ellie Bothwell and the Chloe's (Zebari and George).  Megan Darby and Maddie Ritten were strong in the midfield to gain possession and break up some Highlander attempts.

Bothwell's hard work paid off, when she drew a foul in the box on the Howell defense.  Midfielder Ally Fodell took the PK and drilled it in the top right corner for the 1-1 tie.

 Ellie in another breakaway

Strong defense by Emma Grifffiths, Shannon Mulville, Shannon Durso and Kaitlyn Bayne, along with fine golkeeping by Kayla Cupp, kept Howell from scoring again.

With nine minutes left, the same combination struck again for the Mavs, as Bothwell drew another penalty, when she was tripped in the box.  On the PK this time, Fodell went low left and beat the Howell keeper, who stood there "like a house on the side of the road" (quote from the late Ernie Harwell) for the 2-1 lead, that stood up for the first JV victory of the season.

5/20:  Senior Night

The Milford parents honored the nine seniors at halftime of the Grand Blanc game:  #2 Katie Mulville, #3 Kara Johnson, #4 Hayley Bensek, #6 Erin Winn, #7 Alyssa Adams, #9 Adrien Allward, #10 Andrea Aznar, #11 Tess Zasuwa, and #37 Sara Cupp.

The nine seniors started the game, and held the league leading, and 6th state ranked Bobcats down, but couldn't keep them down long.  Grand Blanc showed the skills and fire-power that has put them at the top, with the game ending 7-0, with Grand Blanc's record now at 13-1-3.
