Mavs Playing a Tough KLAA Schedule

[repeat from last week; new game report below]

In case anybody noticed, the KLAA has 6 teams in the top 15 in the state (see STATE RANKINGS link on the right), including three from the WEST Division (Hartland #7, Grand Blanc #8 and Brighton #14, and Pinckney isn't far behind, and then add North Farmington to their schedule). So without question, the WEST Division is probably the toughest Division in the State, and no breathers in the WEST, which makes it tough on the girls, coaches and us parents.

Even though it's difficult to play error-free for 80 minutes against top teams, the Mavs varsity has played some really outstanding stretches and halves against these top teams. And, the JV team has pulled out a couple of ties. Some very close and respectable games for both teams . . . and maybe an upset could be around the corner??

In contrast, see how well the Mavs play against the non-top 15 teams, and you can see how well they control the ball, get quality scoring opportunities, play stifling defense and get great goal keeping, and generally dominate the play. So, we're proud to see how well they continue to compete against the top teams, and really make those teams take notice of what they're up against (i.e.against Pinckney, the Mavs dominated for the first 20 minutes and a 1-0 lead).

So, keep that in perspective when you watch the games, or have discussions with the coaches or your girls at home, because we all need a positive boost sometimes, when it can wear us all down. We've got a couple more games against the top teams, and others, including a possible KLAA cross-over rematch game against Lakeland in 2 weeks, so Lady Mavs . . . keep having fun and playing hard . . . and we're behind you girls!

5/13:  Mavs Keep it Close Against Brighton

Once again, the Lady Mavs went up against one the state's elite teams at Brighton in the pouring rain, who just came off a 2-2 tie with Grand Blanc.  Even though this game went to the Bulldogs, 3-1, the real story of the game was the way the Mavs played aggressive, and stayed in the game to the end, which will certainly serve them well to get ready for the District tournament.

Brighton scored around the 25 minute mark, but only because the ball got deflected by the Mavs defense into our goal, which happens at times in the flurry in the box, even though the defense played well all night.  But, the Milford D kept Brighton frustrated most of the night, and didn't let them organize their offense, led by senior tri-captain Tess Zasuwa, seniors Hayley Bensek, Kara Johnson, Katie Mulville and Alyssa Adams, junior Alex Peterson, sophomore Sarah Barnhard, and the midfielders checking back as well.  Both Mav keepers, Sara Cupp and Emily Mienkwic, also had to stay very active to stop several Bulldog shots.

 Tess with the boot

Later in the first half, the Mavs showed their explosive skills on a picture perfect play.  The other two tri-captains started the play, when first, senior forward AG Allward moved the ball out of the Milford end, passing up to junior mid-fielder Samantha Sturgeon, who broke out and took the ball quickly down the right wing against one Bulldog defender.  Then, freshman Paige Smith broke down the left side, creating a 2 v 1 attack.  Sturgeon waiting for the defensive mistake, then passed over to Smith, who took a few dribbles, and fired a high shot to the far post past the keeper, tying the score 1-1 at the half, her 7th goal of the season.

Brighton keeper can't make the stop

In the second half, Brighton used the wind to their advantage, firing a shot from 35 yards out to the high post, and followed up with another goal for the 3-1 win. and a 7-2-1 record.  Milford's record is now 4-8.

MHS Girls vs Boys Teams

The boys had all they could handle with the girls varsity soccer team, as they played a close scrimmage match.  The girls varsity team continuously pounded shots on goal all night, which made the boys put their entire team in the net to guard against the Lady Mav barrage, as you can see with the picture.
