Milford's Varsity Plays Tough against strong North Farmington (4/15)

The Lady Mavs soccer team played a talented and physical North Farmington team, who came off thies most successful season in school history in 2009, losing 2-1.

The Raiders started early with good control of the ball, but Milford kept breaking out for some good opportunities and a couple of corner kicks.  Half way through the first, the Lady Mavs turned a ball around at midfield, when senior captain Adrien Allward sent a pass wide out to senior Ryan Winn, who took the ball down the wing to the corner, and lobbed the ball back to the box, which Allward finished off for the goal, her third of the season.  The Raiders scored in the last minute on a corner kick to tie the score at the half.

Milford’s defense had to play tough against a big front line of the Raiders, led by seniors captain Tess Zasuwa, Alyssa Adams, Kara Johnson and Hayley Bensek, junior Max Howard, and sophomore Sarah Bonhard.

Both teams had some early chances in the second half.  But, North Farmington finally scored to break the tie and preserve their victory.  The Mavs continue to get solid goalkeeping from senior Sara Cupp and sophomore Emily Meinkwic, keeping the games close.

Said Coach Mike, "We have had a decent start to the season.  Obviously, the Lakeland result was disappointing, but I felt the girls played well.  The experienced defensive unit is playing very well and will keep us in games.  We need to more going forward, and we've been working on our creativity and generating goal scoring opportunities, but it will take time.  As a team, we are playing great in periods of games and look dangerous on the break.  If we can add some goals to our play, we will have a good season."  Milford's varsity record is now 3-2.

Milford JV Plays Strong Against North Farmington, Ties1-1 (4/15)

The Milford Girls JV Soccer team posted another strong  defensive effort against a tough North Farmington JV team Thursday at Milford’s home field.

The first half was pretty evenly played, but North Farmington managed to get a lone goal past Milford keeper Casey Kubat off a rebound.  The Milford defense was led by sweeper Shannon Durso and stopper Ally Fodell. Forwards Chloe George and Chloe Zeabari as well as Ellie Bothwell led the Milford offensive attack.

In the second half, Milford kept the Raiders in their own end for long stretches.  Despite dominating play for much of the half, the Lady Mavs finally got their lone goal from leading scorer Lianna Bottenberg with just 33 seconds remaining to escape with a hard earned 1- 1 tie. Megan Darby and Madelyn Ritten helped Bottenberg provide the offensive pressure. Keeper Kayla Cupp was perfect and defense was led by sweeper Kailynn Bayne and stopper Fodell.

Milford Comes Back to Beat Holly, 2-1 (4/13)

Milford’s Lady Mavs soccer had all they could handle last Tuesday against a fast and talented Holly team, but showed heart and tenacity to come from behind in the second half to win 2-1.

Holly came out fast to put pressure on the Milford defense.  But, Milford’s defense stiffened up with strong play.  On the other end, the Mavs hit the post twice, and had numerous opportunities with many strong combinations up front.

Holly broke through half way through the first half on a long mad scramble in box that finally found the nets for a 1-0 lead.

The Mavs came out inspired in the second half with momentum and pressure.  Half way through, senior captain Adrien Allward shot over the keeper off the cross bar, which caromed out to freshman Paige Smith, who volleyed the ball strongly into the net to tie the score, her fourth goal of the year.  Ten minutes later, Smith this time sent a corner kick into the middle to the 12 yard mark, and junior captain Sam Sturgeon one-touched it into the net for a 2-1 lead.

Holly came back strong with their own pressure, but the defense remained tight, led by seniors captain Tess Zasuwa, Alssya Adams and Hayley Bensek, juniors Max Howard and Abby Sprinkle, and sophomore Sarah Bonhard, as well as solid play from Caracas, Venezuela native Andrea Aznar.

Milford’s JV Loses Tough Contest to Holly, 1–0 (4/13)

The Mavs controlled play for long stretches of both halves, but were unable get one past the Holly keeper.

Milford had one of it’s best chances very early in the game, when Chloe George ripped a high shot off the crossbar about six minutes into the game. Lianna Bottenberg was all over the field for Milford, and had several of the Mav’s best chances, including a couple of partial breakaways, only to be stymied by the Holly keeper.

 JV tri-captains . . . Megan, Casey, Kayla

Chloe Zeabari,  Ellie Bothwell,  Morgan McGinnis, and Megan Darby applied consistent pressure on the offensive end and sent many shots just wide right of the Holly goal.

Meanwhile, the Lady Mavs defense was led by strong games by sweeper Kaitlynn Bayne, stopper Allison Fodell and outside defender Emma Griffiths.  Milford’s keeper Casey Kubat made numerous stops, including a couple of sliding saves, and only allowed the one Holly goal off a scramble in front of the net about midway through the first half.
