5/26:  Mavs Hit Their Stride Against Wayne

The Lady Mavs may have gotten the game that they needed to get ready for Districts, beating Wayne Memorial, 6-0 in the KLAA Lakes vs Kensington crossover game in their final home game of the season.

The Mavs kept the ball on the Wayne end most of the game, and the first half featured a couple of seniors from the defensive end doing the scoring on the offensive end.  First, Hayley Bensek, playing left-Mid, scored twice, once sliding the ball between the keeper's legs.

Then tri-captain, Tess Zasuwa, scored her first goals as a Mav, also scoring twice from the attacker position, first chipping over the keeper, then breaking through the defense and firing to the wide post.

Milford had several other quality offensive attacks, with shots from both senior Ryan and sophomore Erin Winn, junior tri-captain Sam Sturgeon and seniors Katie Mulville and tri-captain Adrien Allward, but the half ended 4-0.

Milford continued the offensive barrage in the second half.  The scoring this time came from freshman Paige Smith her 10th goal of the season and junior tri-captain Sam Sturgeon.  Junior Abby Sprinkle broke through and scored an apparent goal, but the play was called off-sides.

Milford travels to play Clarkston (at Clarkston) for their District opener on Tuesday at 7:00.

5/24:  Mavs Fall to Lakeland in Sudden Death OT

Milford played the West vs North KLAA Cross-over game against Lakeland, controlling the play in many parts of the game, limiting Eagle chances, but Lakeland squeaked out the OT, sudden-death victory, 3-2.

Lakeland was able to find a goal late in the first half, with the half ending 1-0.  Lakeland came out in the second half, and scored on a free kick, that was headed perfectly into the nets on the far post.

Behind 2-0, Milford got the wake-up call, and responded by ratcheting up the pressure with several quality chances, hitting the post and crossbar.  Senior Hayley Bensek broke in on the goal, and again hit the crossbar, but sophomore Sarah Bonhard was on the other side of the goal, and fired the ball into the net at the 20 minute mark.

Milford took a free kick a minute later, with Junior Sam Sturgeon lofting the ball to freshman Paige Smith to tie the score.

The Mavs did well in overtime to look for opportunities, but Lakeland surprised the Mav defense by lofting a long free kick over the Maverick back line, which was chased down by the Lakeland attacker, who had an open one-on-one run on the Mav goal, beating the diving Mav keeper, sophomore Emily Mienkwic, to end the game.
