4/29: Mavs Break Loose Against Howell

For the first half, the Lady Mavs kept pressure on the Howell defense, but couldn't find a way to put the ball into the net, but they scored twice in the second half and shut out Howell, 2-.0.

The Mavs played well in both ends throughout the game, combining a controlled offense with good defense and goalkeeping. Milford finally broke the scoreless drought at the 20 minute mark in the second half, when junior captain Sam Sturgeon sent a corner kick to the six, right to freshman Paige Smith, who headed another one of her goals into the top corner, her fifth goal of the season.

The Mavs scored again with six to go, when senior Ryan Winn took the ball down the right wing, as she did many times in the game, past the Highlander defenders, and fired a shot over the keeper to finish off the scoring, her fourth goal of the season.

Sam to Paige for the goal!

The Mavs defense not only played well in the defensive end, but joined in on many plays up front, including seniors Hayley Bensek, Kara Johnson (playing one her best games as a Maverick), Alyssa Adams, sophomore Sarah Bonhard, and junior Max Howard, who also had a good shot on goal. The keepers did their part sharing the duties, senior Sara Cupp and sophomore Emily Meinkwic, their third shutout victory of the year.

Earlier in the week, the Mavs played a strong Brighton team, keeping it close in the first half, but finally falling to the Bulldogs, 3-0.

The Defensive Wall . . . it worked!

The Lady Mavs now stand 4-5-0 for the season (1-3 in the KLAA West).
